The Invisible Boss?

Recently I read an article by Michelle Braden on the Lead Change Group website entitled “Six Ways To Make Your Words More Meaningful.” The article discusses the importance of choosing your words carefully such that they add value to the message you are delivering. More importantly, however, was the key message that words and actions must be aligned. The six ways that Michelle refers to are:

  1. Make sure that your words are supported by your actions.
  2. Be transparent.
  3. Ask more often than you tell.
  4. Hold people accountable for their role and be accountable for yours.
  5. Communicate your Vision.
  6. Be visible.

I will leave you to read Michelle’s post for the reasoning behind this list. However, the final item on the list is one that certainly resonates with me.

 Be visible.

People will see you as more accessible and willing to listen. Being visible is not about “looking over everyone’s shoulder.” Being seen can be done through the use of all aspects of media, written communications, interviews, showing up for team meetings/celebrations, etc. Visible leaders create engagement. Visible leaders inspire confidence. 

I have worked in companies of all shapes and sizes from small start-ups to major corporations like Sony and British Telecom. It always seems to me that the larger a firm gets the more distant the boss gets and as that happens the less the boss is trusted.

Leaders need to work hard to remain in touch and visible as their team grows. If they fail at this they are no longer leaders!
