I have been reading Max De Pree’s book, Leadership is an Art. It is a fascinating insight into the De Pree family and their views on leadership. The book speaks about why it is important to understand and accept diversity and how admitting that we cannot know or do everything leads to being able to build on the strengths of others.
In my experience, I have realised that teams are, by their very nature, diverse and providing the ability for team members to have meaning, fulfilment and purpose in their corporate life is critical to the success of the firm. As Max De Pree puts it:
“When we think about leaders and the variety of gifts people bring to corporations and institutions, we see that the art of leadership lies in polishing and liberating and enabling those gifts.”
One of Max De Pree’s most famous quotes is:
“Leaders should be able to Stand Alone, Take the Heat, Bear the Pain, Tell the Truth, and Do What’s Right” Max De Pree.
I think this quote sums it all up in terms of what every leader needs to do to succeed; Have courage and integrity; Be focused and persevere.
What are your thoughts? What do you feel is necessary for a leader to be successful?
